Quality Control on the Last Mile

Notes from a Driver:

Hi everyone,

Bob here — proud delivery driver at one of Direct Link Logistics’ terminals. I’ve been on the road for a while now, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this: in our business, accuracy is everything. When you’re delivering critical medical shipments, there’s no room for error. Patients, hospitals, and pharmacies are all counting on us to get it right — every time.

I wanted to share a few habits and tips that have helped me consistently deliver with 100% accuracy. These aren’t fancy tricks — just solid, everyday quality control practices anyone can build into their routine.

CHECK THE MANIFEST — Your Roadmap for the Day

Always start with the manifest and route sheet before you load a single tote into your van. Take a moment to review your manifest and count each tote for each stop. This is your roadmap for the day, and you can’t afford to guess.

Read through it carefully. Match each stop to what you see on the dock. I keep a pen handy to mark off as I load, so I know every tote and piece of freight is accounted for. If something doesn’t match up, let your manager or supervisor know before you leave. It’s much easier to fix a mistake at the terminal than out on the road.

GOLDEN RULE: I never leave the dock without 100% of the scheduled product.

MASTER THE SCANNER — Your Swiss Army Knife  for Delivery

Your scanner is more than a compliance tool — it’s your best friend on the route. Learn how to use it properly, and to its full potential.

Always scan every tote as you load it, and again as you deliver. The scanner is your first and last line of defense against mistakes. If you scan something that doesn’t belong, the system will tell you. That annoying “Input Needed” beep? That’s your cue to double-check the label, figure out what’s wrong, and fix it before moving on.

Don’t skip steps. The scanner’s there to help you, not slow you down.

PRO TIPS FOR NEW DRIVERS

When I first started, the Lead who trained me suggested I ask each stop to double-check the labels on the totes as I delivered them. That advice paid off big time.

On my route, I had three Walmarts and two Walgreens — easy to mix up. Asking the pharmacy techs to verify saved me from a misdelivery more than once. Plus, it helped them develop better receiving habits. A win-win.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Quality control isn’t just a task — it’s a mindset. If you make these habits part of your daily routine, delivering with accuracy becomes second nature.

Remember: our customers are counting on us. Every tote we deliver is tied to someone’s health and well-being.

Stay safe, stay sharp, and stay focused on excellence!
